Our Partnership
The kʷikʷəƛ̓əm people, also known as the Kwikwetlem First Nation, have a rich history and profound connection to the Coquitlam Watershed, with archaeological evidence confirming continuous occupation of their ancestral lands for at least 10,000 years. Renowned for their spirit and winter dances, canoe building, and masterful sturgeon and salmon fishing, the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm people have thrived under the guidance of ancient Coast Salish laws and protocols. These customary laws have not only governed their territory but have also instilled a deep responsibility to care for their lands, waters, and all that lies within. Their name, meaning “Red Fish Up the River”, underscores their historic connection to the vibrant sockeye salmon runs in the Coquitlam River and Coquitlam Lake, which were integral to their culture before the construction of the Coquitlam Dam.
